Read the Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot. It describes a scientific theory that the universe is in fact a "multi-verse" wherein an infinite amount of realities overlap one another all at the same time. Since our consciousness is only tuned into one we are not aware of this - but sometimes, glitches happen, and we can become aware of out of place objects. Kinda neat, huh? Hopefully this idea might make what happened a little less creepy. :)
